ScreenFlow 2.0 almost here – Expanded Beta here NOW!

30 September 2009 | Product News
Share

If you’ve ever been involved in the software development process, you know – it’s a bit like raising a child. If the analogy holds, then ScreenFlow 1.0 was “born” a little over 18 months ago, and now we’re getting ready to send him off to school. (The childhood years go by so fast, don’t they?) We’re almost ready to let go – but we want to spend a little more time making sure it’s absolutely ready.

beta1 ScreenFlow 2.0 almost here Expanded Beta here NOW!As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child”; and we’ve certainly taken advantage of our village for help and advice as we continue to nurture and develop ScreenFlow to get it ready for the next phase.  Most important to us is that we don’t send our little ScreenFlow 2.0 into the world before it is fully ready and prepared for the challenges that await. We’ve already been arranging a few ‘play-dates’ (i.e. beta testing… OK, maybe I’ve taken this analogy too far…) to ensure it could handle real-world demands. We’re *almost* ready, but we want to expand the beta testing a little further- to be absolutely sure that ScreenFlow 2.0 will be the most stable product it can be upon launch.

SO… with that in mind, we are accepting new beta testers to be part of our expanded Beta program. All we ask of our beta testers is that they use the product as they would normally, and report any anomalies back to us. In return, our beta testers will get the ScreenFlow 2.0 upgrade for free (and – for those of you itching to get your hands on the new features of 2.0 – you get a chance to try them out before the official launch of the product.)

To apply to be part of our expanded beta program, submit a brief comment below with the reasons why you think you’d be a great beta tester!

HOST UPDATE: Thank you for the overwhelming response! As of now we have MORE than enough applicants for our expanded beta program, and we are not accepting any more at this time. But don’t fret – 2.0 is coming very soon! Stay tuned….

    Hi,

I’d love to be able to beta-test the new ScreenFlow 2.0.
I’m regularly making screencasts (some for customers, and some for the public ( http://cappuccinocasts.com/ )

I really enjoy using ScreenFlow 1.5.4, but I face 3 annoying bugs, as shown here :
    http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/40466/tmp/screenflow-bugs.mov

I would also be glad to see one improvement, as shown here :
    http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/40466/tmp/screenflow-improve.mov

I’d be glad to test ScreenFlow 2.0 and report bugs, make suggestions if I can help!
Also, I can’t wait a couple of weeks (http://twitter.com/screenflow/status/4507572983) to put my hands on it! ;-)

    All the best,
    Thomas.

    Hi, there.
We’re just about to launch four new online university level courses aimed at teachers wanting further education in ICTs, and we rely heavily on videos and lectures using screen recording software. I’ve been using ScreenFlow, but miss some of the features that you’re offering in v 2.0. I’d really not change to Camtasia, as I love your product (so do a couple of the other lecturers), and as we’re entering a period of heavy production of screencasts and lectures, a beta of 2.0 would really save the day, and get me through the waiting period. (Hopefully, as I’m recording hours and hours of screencast, exporting and publishing them in different ways and formats, my beta testing could be useful for you too :-)

    Cheers,

I use ScreenFlow on an almost daily basis. I am a music professor. I teach, among other things, music technology courses. I use ScreenFlow to demonstrate all sorts of music technology software. I’d be very excited to test the future version of ScreenFlow. In fact, our department is considering purchasing ScreenFlow to allow students to make their own tutorial videos! It would be great to test ScreenFlow 2.0 with an eye toward introducing this opportunity to our students!

Honestly, I’m not exactly sure what would make me a good beta tester. I do look at many aspects in applications, taking account design, usability, features, and more. Even though ScreenFlow 1.0 is great, I feel it is a bit lacking. Missing features that make its editing software portion not that useful. From what I here about 2.0 is that it’s much better, and I would like to see that first hand.

I have just built a new website with a lot of screen recordings to demo features of the software that we do marketing for in Sweden.
I’d like to start using the new features – especially being able to speed up and slow down recordings since I often record screen and sound separately – by the way something the competition does poorly.
It would be fun to use the new version too – I am so looking forward to using it.

Screenflow has consistently captured two hours of my ramblings for every lesson I do (so about 8 hours worth a week) with no crashes or issues. Exports in about a tenth of the time that camtasia takes with much better results.

I work in ScreenFlow every day for production of training material for universities and news media in Europe. I use it as backup when the internet connection is lost. I have always two Keynotes: one with only a few Screenflow movies in it and one full of them. Most of the time people don’t notice that it isn’t live : )

I see great possibilities for 2.0 or later for chromakey support to make brilliant screen casts possible (like Videocue).

Screenflow and Videocue are progras that I use to seduce newspapers and other media to use the Mac. I use it to make a first impression for longer multi media courses and till now I always get a great response.

ScreenFlow 1 does a great job already, but I need to convince my wife, and our client, that it’s really better to create these on a Mac, rather than in Camtasia for Windows. (I found Camtasia for Mac severely lacking in the performance dept.) But, we really want to try out the new transitions in SF 2.0, since my wife thinks the 1.0 video actions are too time-consuming and complicated. So, that’s why I’d love a crack at the beta.

I’d love to beta test. I’m a professor for a doctoral program in education at the University of San Francisco. I use ScreenFlow a lot: for example all my first-year students are learning about how to use Excel for statistics via a series of ScreenFlow tutorials. But I’ve also created tutorials on using Zotero, “looking a photographs” in combination with a Keynote document, and lots of ScreenFlow tutorials.

I’m not sure I take advantage of all the features of Screenflow, but in every screencast I export my audio, enhance, bring back in (hopefully this will be easier in 2), I use the zoom feature a lot to focus on parts of the screen, I use the text/title feature all the time, and I use chapters in over 90% of my tutorials (since they tend to be longish and more technical).

I also teach the Multimedia Learning course within our program and will be covering screencasting software with the class in 3 to 5 weeks. I would love to update them on all the new enhanced features of ScreenFlow.

ScreenFlow also came in handy for giving a talk at a users group meeting — instead of fumbling with mice and such, I had a simple demo already recorded, and I could stop and start it as needed during discussion.

My test scenarios will include videos recorded using a camera which isn’t my webcam, I’ll have to incorporate videos created using iMovie (by replacing the background using a green color), and will have to record videos from programming tools, for training, so, a lot of pan, zoom, navigation effects, etc.

Well, finally and the most important, screenflow will be tested at an unique tropical warm environment, next to the beautiful and warm beaches at the northeast of Brazil. :-)

I’ve been so excited about the freeze frame feature in SF because at the moment I have to dump the project into iMovie just for that feature. I would love to my tutorials for Heap and Torch, just in SF. I’m also a developer so I know how to file a decent bug report.

I am constantly developing videos for faculty, staff, students, and external users of our system, Tk20, for the College of Teacher Education and Leadership at ASU.

I use screenFlow everyday to create walk-throughs. A chance to beta test the software would be a great opportunity for me and to provide valuable feedback based on how I use your software.

Regardless. I cannot wait for Version 2!

I’ve been using Screenflow since it was first released. I’ve produced well over 100 movies and feel that I could really run the new version through it’s paces. I work for a 50,000 + organization and serve in a roll that develops software training for many,. I would love to put V. 2.0 to test as I begin working on a new, large training project.

Now I need to finalise a lot of tutorials and I would appreciate to be able to use features of 2.0 asap. I was looking on your WebPage on a daily basis since I saw your press release announcing 2.0.

We’ve been using screenflow internally for training. Over the next few months we are rolling out a new social hub for the Servoy community. We will be using screenflow much more actively as this site goes live.

At the core of the social hub I just mentioned is a product of our own that has been in private beta for over a year. As such, we’re well aware of how to provide useful feedback to a development team.

Having access to the the latest beta at this point would be quite beneficial from our perspective. Since we’ll be hammering it pretty hard, it is likely we’ll uncover any gotchas that still remain. Thanks for the (hopeful) beta invite. Cheers!

    hi

i use screenflow for creating (sometimes hour long) educational material, promotional videos, and for presentations

so, i use it within a fairly complex workflow, along keynote, image processing (i like pixelmator), vector graphics (AI and OmniGraffle), garageband, and more

the next think I’d love to do with screenflow, but found a bit cumbersome, is post processing of interviews we do with politicians and institution officials

I’d really like to jump into the new version and see if it is the better, and familiar, tool for that

    thanks

Using screenflow both professionally and personally, I’m curious what has been done to make this very good piece of software even better. Working in webdevelopment I’m used to bughunting, have a fair idea of what might cause problems, both real bugs and user interface problems. In short: I would love to get into the beta ;)

I use ScreenFlow for my presentations and online training materials. I see enormous potential for expanding scope of use with the new features–namely the transitions and the ability to insert still photos. It could be a powerful means of creating slideshows on websites and making much more complex presentation slides.

As I refocus my blog from exclusively open source web apps to include Mac teaching and research tools, I am very likely to blog about ScreenFlow.

I would be a good beta tester because I user ScreenFlow regularly to make screen casts and I have in the past used competing screen capture applications.

I will be able to provide balanced and informative reports back to the mothership as it were, about what I have been doing or trying to do with ScreenFlow. There will always be anomalies with new software and good reports back about what was happening at the time of the problem is vital to catch bugs and get rid of them.

Really looking forward to seeing what the version two can do and would be happy to make suggestions as to what else I think it could do or could do better. I see that there will be transitions in version 2, that has to be good.

Thanks for considering Mac 20 Questions to be a beta tester of ScreenFlow.

I’d love to use ScreenFlow for a few things:

    (1) My family is spread out across the US, and looks to me for tech support. In many cases we don’t want to deal with it on a visit because time is limited. Screen sharing helps a lot, but sometimes I just wish I had the time to show them how to get more out of their computers. ScreenFlow would allow me to produce nice, annotated, narrated screencasts demonstrating things they ought to know about – how to start taking advantage of power user features, how to set up their backups properly, etc.

    (2) I’ll admit it…I get a kick out of beta programs. Sometimes the best way to report a bug is with a screencast.

    (3) As a UI designer I’m always looking for new and better ways to describe design. ScreenFlow would allow me to (a) share examples of good/interesting design with others more easily, and (b) add to my arsenal of prototyping tools.

I am a ScreenFlow user who has fallen in love with your software. Its ability to create smooth-as-silk HD video is simply amazing. I must confess that I even tried Camtasia for Mac and found it to be a confusing-to-use, slow piece of software that created choppy video on my 2.8 GHz iMac!

I use ScreenFlow internally to produce teaching tools. The feature set that has been added to 2.0 will allow much more of my post-production to be kept within ScreenFlow instead of having to use iMovie or Final Cut Pro for some elements. I can’t wait to get my hands on it, and I hope you’ll allow me to do some beta testing for you. Thanks for the opportunity!

I would be happy to let you know if I find any issues or anomolies in the beta software. Hello there!

I am an elementary school teacher who uses Screenflow to produce screencasts of website walkthroughs for parents and students. I also use Screenflow to capture my Parallels virtual machine for Windows. This is helpful for when I need to demo specific pieces of Windows-only software (Movie Maker, Internet Explorer, etc.). Each and everytime I use Screenflow for this it performs wonderfully. Each and every time a fellow Mac user is looking for screencasting software I point them directly to Screenflow!

I would love to try 2.0 and help test the new features for you. I am eager to help and I am very impressed with what I see here on The Screening Room!

    Thank you in advance :)
